About UUM

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), which was officially established on 16 February 1984, is the sixth Malaysian public university. It is the only university that was set up to specialise solely in management education from the very beginning of its establishment.

The planning of the construction of this sixth university began in August 1983 when the Ministry of Education Malaysia began to give form, in earnest, to the idea of setting up this university. On 19th October 1983, the Cabinet gave its official approval for this project in Kedah. At that time, the project was called “The Sixth University Project”. Several months later, the temporary office of the sixth university, officially named Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), was officially opened on 15th February 1984 in Jitra.

Four months after its official opening, the UUM office was relocated to its provisional campus – the Darul Aman Campus – in Jitra, in June 1984, when the first phase of the project had been completed. The relocation was carried out so as to be able to usher in the very first batch of students for the academic year which commenced in early June 1984. The Darul Aman Campus was on a 62-acre tract of land in Bandar Darulaman. It was 18 kms north of Alor Setar and 4.8 kms from Jitra.

Student Residential Halls 

UUM has 15 Student Residential Halls (SRH), which, all together, house 20,000 students. The SRHs are named after Malaysian companies, institutions, and organisations of repute, namely MAS, TENAGA NASIONAL BERHAD, TRADEWINDS, PETRONAS, EON, MISC, SIME DARBY, BSN, TM, PROTON, MAYBANK, YAYASAN ALBUKHARY, BANK MUAMALAT, BANK RAKYAT, and SME BANK.

Universiti Utara Malaysia also concerned about fitness and health of its students. Various of sports facilities built to support this goal. existing sports facilities in UUM consists of futsal, badminton, basket ball, etc. This facility is placed around the dorm so that students can easily use the sports facilities.

Sultanah Bahiyah Library

The Sultanah Bahiyah Library, Universiti Utara Malaysia had its genesis when the University was established in 1984.

The temporary campus was in Bandar Baru Darulaman. When the university campus in Sintok, Kedah was ready for operations in 1990, the library was among the pioneer departments to move in. The university campus is located at Sintok, Kedah; 48 kilometers north of Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah and 10 kilometers east of Changlun, a small town on the North-South Highway. Set on 926 hectares of forest and former tin mining land interspersed with streams and small lakes, it is one of the most beautiful campuses in the region. The campus is near Bukit Kayu Hitam, a new township on the Malaysia-Thai borders.

The library is housed in a five-storey building situated in the heart of the campus. It is equipped with the most up-to-date facilities for the use of students and staff. The 21, 170sq meter building has a seating capacity of up to 1000 persons including discussion and carrel rooms. The library was officially opened by His Royal Highness Al-Sultan Almu'Tasimu Billahi Muhibbuddin Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, The Sultan of Kedah on 21st September 1999. The library is named after the late, Her Royal Highness Almarhumah Tuanku Hajjah Bahiyah binti Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Sultanah of Kedah.

University Health Center

University Health Centre (PKU) providing health services not only across campus but also patients in outpatient, accident and emergency, dental, pharmacy, medical laboratory, hospital observation, diagnostic imaging and women's health.
